Growing up in Somalia, Dr. Abshir had no exposure to Mandarin. No classes, no apps, no community speakers. When he arrived in China for university, he started from absolute zero.
Over the next decade, he navigated the language, earned his undergraduate degree, his Master's, and ultimately a PhD in Chinese Language Education from Tianjin University — one of China's most prestigious institutions.
